There are many reasons why supercritical carbon dioxide technology is advantageous. The technology maintains a high quality of extracted products as the process of extraction requires a low temperature and therefore does not decrease the functional properties of the extracted component. The use of supercritical carbon dioxide also replaces solvents that are harmful and brain damaging to humans (The Lancet November 2006). Therefore this technology is of great value today in efforts to improve environmental health.

A sustainable solution

Supercritical technology is a sustainable solution in many ways. Carbon dioxide is for example available in unlimited quantities. Supercritical carbon dioxide is non toxic but has almost the same qualities as a toxic non polar organic solvent. Supercritical carbon dioxide is unlike non polar solvents also non explosive and non flammable and is therefore easier to handle. By using supercritical carbon dioxide a component can be extracted from raw material in a low temperature.
